Chris Cheung is a film composer, arranger and pianist from Hong Kong. With a hybrid background of classical and contemporary music, his works have spanned from traditional instrumentations to experimental electronic soundscapes. After graduating from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Film Scoring and Professional Music (Concentrate in Jazz Piano Performance), he has since been involved in a diverse range of projects both locally and internationally. 

His most recent endeavor is the score for It Remains, a highly anticipated debut feature from Hong Kong/LA-based director Kelvin Shum, starring Anson Lo, Summer Chan, Tommy Chu Pak Hong, David Chiang Da-wei, Angela Yuen etc. The score received critical acclaim and was praised for its contribution in building the suspenseful soundscape for the film, notably for its unconventional blend of ethnic instruments like Didgeridoo, Fujara, with processed vocal textures, and a wide array of instrumental and synthesized sounds utilizing extended techniques.

He was also the music designer for Garden of Repose, an innovative and cross-disciplinary program at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival that fused live performance (by local choir NOEMA), installation, lighting design etc. in combination with the state-of-the-art L-ISA sound system for an immersive auditory experience. 


His other scoring works can also be heard in an array of films and media, including short films Interview with Lo Ting: An Oral history project (2022, Starring The Absent Brother - official jury selection at the IFVA Festival Hong Kong), The Witch I Love (2021, Starring Alma Kwok, Eric Chow - official selection at Asian Summer Festival, Barcelona), A Hundred Miles Song (2021, Starring Shiga Lin, Yatho Wong); action feature Quan Dao: A Journey of a Boxer (2020, Starring Danny Chan, Lam Ka Wah); documentaries and narrative films produced by Radio Television Hong Kong; as well as commercials from clients like Watsons and Otterbox, etc. He has also provided additional music for Taiwanese feature film Reclaim (2021, starring Nina Paw, Johnny Kou, Ko Chia-Yen), assisting the recording of the score performed by the Capellen Orchestra in Czech Republic. The film premiered at the 2020 Golden Horse Film Festival, Taiwan.

As the music director, he was commissioned to write a live soundtrack to Rimini-Protokoll: 100% Hong Kong produced by the renowned German experimental theater company.

Nevertheless, he has worked as the composer's assistant for LA-based composer/world music performer Yuval Ron, and renowned Hong Kong film composer Henry Lai. Moreover, Cheung is also a long term collaborator for Music Children Foundation, an NGO providing free-of-charge music programs to underprivileged children aged 16 or below in Hong Kong; he frequently arranges for their music curriculum, musical, concerts - as well as the score and soundscape for a family-friendly immersive venue lately. 

In May 2021 his indie fusion band Birdmen released their debut EP The Bird Manifests, featuring an eclectic blend of styles including indie rock, jazz, and cantonese pop, receiving acclaim from veteran critic Chi Chung Wong. Their single Flower was aired on his renowned show Chi Chung’s Choice on Commercial Radio Hong Kong.

As a pianist, Cheung has studied with pianists Yoko Miwa, Ted Lo and Linda Yim, and attained distinction in LRSM piano performance, ABRSM in 2011. Recently he organized a piano trio tribute concert for the late renowned Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, alongside violinist Clement Ho, cellist Chloe Ling and special guest Chi Chung Wong. He was also featured as a guest keyboard player on Yuval Ron Ensemble's album Unity of the Heart and French indie songwriter Sophie Timper's album Maman et Moi. 

He was awarded the Bei Shan Tang Foundation Scholarship, Berklee College of Music World Tour Scholarship, and the Berklee College of Music Piano Department Award in support of his studies at Berklee.

張永諾是一位來自香港的作曲家和鋼琴家。畢業於波士頓柏克萊音樂學院後,他積極參與不同的創作。他近期為岑嘉彥執導的《釀魂》配樂,當中融合了Didgeridoo, Fujara等民族樂器,電音與傳統配器; 最近亦擔任了第52屆香港藝術節跨界節目《憩園》的音樂設計師,結合本地合唱團NOĒMA的現場演出、裝置藝術、燈光設計、配合最先進的L-ISA音響系統,營造出沉浸式的聽覺體驗,帶領觀眾穿梭聲、光、影交錯的奇幻花園。

張氏曾為台灣長片《一家之主》編寫附加配樂,並協助作曲家黎允文錄製該電影的管弦音樂。他參與的電影也曾在不同影展放映,如IFVA、金馬獎等。除電影外,他還擔任過德國劇團Rimini-Protokoll《100%香港》的劇場音樂總監,並參與現場表演。他也活躍於本地爵士樂界,不時參與現場表演,近期亦常與本地DJ黃志淙合作,在致敬著名作曲家坂本龍一的活動中演出。
